When every festival comes around there is always a buzz in every family that celebrates it. Children expect things that they will only get during this time of the year. There seems to be magic in the air as all ages in the house hold take on the special once a year chores. However for the less fortunate these times will be even more trying. More money than usual will be needed, at least to prevent the season from being bleak.
Prices for basic groceries and food items have escalated up to 20 percent following the Government removal of fuel subsidies. This has put a severe strain on the very low income group as wages are yet to compensate any part of this. There seems to be a quiet desperation among these people who are not heard above the slogans by the ruling party that all is good. People are always falling behind in all kinds of bill payments and have fewer and fewer places to turn to for help.
What used to be something that was eagerly awaited every year now threatens to turn into a time of desperation and sorrow. Some of the very desperate find their way to the DAP service centre at 7A, Persiaran Raja Muda Musa in Klang. Here assembly man Manoharan and his volunteers do their best to bring a little cheer to the needy. Different forms either in food packages, clothing or cash is distributed to the many that come for help. There is never enough, for there are too many but whatever possible is done.
